What is the difference between UR studio and Polyscope X?

For context, I want to familiarize myself with Universal Robots products and am very much a beginner, but I have much more experience with PLC programming.

I don’t have any physical UR robot around to familiarize myself with the product. I understand that for UR robots, the development is usually done directly on the controller, through the teach pendant (or via external keyboard and monitor). My understanding is that UR studio can also be used to develop robot applications and simulate them. Is my understanding correct?

I am having trouble using UR Studio

  • If the software is called UR Studio, why does is it named Polyscope X when I run it? As of today, Polyscope 10.12 is the most recent version, but opening UR Studio opens Polyscope 10.10. Is possible to have access to version 1.12 in the browser?
  • By default, a UR5e robot is selected. On one of my computers, changing for any other model crashes the software. On another computer, I don’t have to option to select the robot arm at all. Is this normal behavior?
  • In UR studio, most of the settings mentionned in the Polyscope manual are absent. There are no password, connection or security settings available in the hamburger menu.
  • Is there a way to declare global variables in UR Studio? According to the manual I should have access to a variables pages under the program structure page. In UR Studio, I instead have a Studio page. I should also be able to navigate to application - application variables, but there is no icon for application variables in UR Studio.
  • Is it possible to toggle between manual mode and automatic mode in UR Studio? The icon is also not present

Am I approaching things completely the wrong way? Is this even the intended way to use UR Studio? Or is it a better idea to get my hands on a physical UR Robot to learn.
