Setting up a robot for plasma cutting

Good evening all.

A few months ago I bought a Lorch setup with a UR10 and have been getting to grips with using it for Mig welding. I use Solidworks a lot and have used early CNC machines in the past, so have got on quite well.

We are now looking to buy a CNC plasma table but I am wondering if it makes more sense to use another UR10 along with a plasma source rather than a traditional CNC table. I suspect it will not be as user friendly, but much more capable.

If it is a viable option, can anyone shed some light on how easy it would be to program i.e. sending drawings over, setting reference points etc? I know the dxf files will have to be converted which is straight forward, but positioning onto a sheet etc is something I have no idea about, whereas plasma tables have user friendly displays for this purpose.

If software already exists for this exact purpose then it would be ideal as I simply don’t have enough time to reinvent the wheel!

Many thanks,
TC

The e-series robots have a URCap built-in that can read G-code. It simply requires you to register your robot, and then it should be activated in the URCap settings.
This is ideal for stuff like this, since you can generate your G-code on your computer and transfer it to the robot. Then you just set the robot in a start position, and then start reading the G-code.

That is very helpful, thank you.

We have an opportunity to buy another CB3 very reasonably but if this URCap is for E series only then I will have to weigh up options!

I have had a look but can’t find any remote toolpath options for CB3 series, do you know if there are any options for this?

I have not heard of a solution for the CB3, no. All the new features and plugins are made for the e-series, so I would definitely consider this series instead of the CB3.

I don’t know if a third party has developed something similar to Remote TCP and Toolpath for the CB3, but this URCap is developed by UR themselves.
