We are planning to get a Robot of the eSeries. Recently we had a distributor in house, and he meant for our application, he would explicitely choose Polyscope 5 over Polyscope X. He meant, Polyscope X is specifically designed for use of feeding CNC machines. So, that it is a different UI for different application and Polyscope 5 will be developed in parallel and not going to be obsolete. It was hard for me to believe, and also, in my own research, I never found this argument, that Polyscope X would have been designed specifically for such applications, but rather that it is the successor of Polyscope 5, which also makes ways more sense. Can someone comfirm?
Unfortunately I couldn’t find out about any announcement when Polyscope 5 gets obsolete, but I can’t imagine that it wil be developed further in parallel forever… Is the date not yet known?
As it is about a new application, so all programs have to be teached from the Scratch, I would go for Polyscope X. Is there any reason against it?
The idea with PolyScope X was indeed to tend to CNC machines to begin with. But that’s not how it is anymore, and X is/will be a full-fledged operating system for the robots.
I say “will be” since it’s still a new OS and not nearly developed enough for my liking. I will also go with PolyScope 5 today, but I am sure 5 will be discontinued at some point due to X taking over.
PolyScope X is still missing some features, which I use frequently on PolyScope 5, which is the main reason for me choosing 5 still.
Thanks! A good to know, that’s why the seller was saying that
As we are setting up a new application we prefer to go for the new thing, also because we heard that you cant reuse your Polyscope 5 Programs, and we don’t expect that will change in future..
About missing features:
In our application we will Palettizing, some socket communication over UR script to talk to a PC with some test applicaiton, and logic to decide what to do depending on the test application’s answer, and beside that only movements and probably a force function.
Do you know if one of those features is yet missing?
After buying the robot we will just test those, before making the whole program, so if something would not work, we would just manually install Polyscope 5, for which I saw instructions.
I believe the long-term support for polyscope 5 is 5-7 years. Also be careful about just installing Polyscope 5 on a robot that had X on it. I am not confident that you can just flip-flop them. Do the research on that
I have worked with both, at the moment 5 is better than X and has more compatibility with 3rd party grippers and the like.
However X is gradually getting better and I think that it’s a better long term option.
Additionally, if you have a Polyscope X control box you can install Polycope 5 on it. But you cannot install Polyscope X on a Polyscope 5 control box. So if you don’t like X you can downgrade and have the option to upgrade to X at a later time.
Yes, you cannot directly import your Polyscope 5 programs into Polyscope X, if you are starting a fresh new project and expect it for the long run, I would recommend Polyscope X.
In terms of URScript, it does have (almost?) the same capabilities as Polyscope 5, so you can connect the robot to a server and run logic the same way (using statements like “if”, “while”, etc).
About 3rd party tools, they are on the way, but some partners like OnRobot and Robotiq have already released their URCapX And about simulation, the UR Studio link provided by @efn is def the way to go
Thanks. About Robotiq: on their web page I can’t find information yet that Hand-E would support Polyscope X, but on UR market place it lists Polyscope X under compability. Unfortunately, my question to Robotiq remains unanswered so far, do you know more?
