Additional 24Vdc supply

Hello UR Community,

We use Red Light to announce the operators that robot is in the error state. Digital output function - Low when unscheduled stop, otherwise high and relay is used for switching on the light. Digital Output controls the 24Vdc power. 24Vdc is also taken from the robot.

Problem: The function works properly if there is a protective stop, but if there is Fault or Violation - robot switches off 24Vdc supply.

Solution: I want to use additional 24Vdc power supply from different source. I was thinking about using 240Vac to 24Vdc converter.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone done this before?
  2. Which brand of converter have you used?
  3. Robot, sensors and other gadgets are connected to each other via Cabinet. Can I also mount converter to the same Din Rail next to Ground Flow Through Terminals connected to the robot?

Thanks in advance,

Giorgi

Hi @giorgigedaminski.

I think you can use Configurable inputs (CI, yellow terminal). As I know the 24VDC power will always be supplied at this terminal.

Hi @HungNguyen.HopLong ,

I didn’t know that. I’ll give a try. thank you.

Just be aware that if you mix and match voltage from the external supply and the UR’s supply, you can get incorrect readings if you don’t ground them all to the same reference. In fact, the UR Controller has terminals for sourcing power FROM your external power supply. That will ensure that all 24V terminals on the controller are in reference to the external power supply. This also allows the IO to go up to 3A total instead of the default 2A.

Can I use these terminals for additional power supply? Normally these terminals are bridged. So I can supply 24V here instead of the bridge, correct?

Correct. See the user manual here for additional information: Controller I/O
