Toolbar with variables and signals

Hi all,
I am new to urcap and I am working at the development of a simple urcap composed of a tool bar with a simple screen showing some indicators and buttons. These indicators and buttons will act on some program or installation variables and signals (profinet, modbus). Can someone explain me the guidelines to go through this project? How can I interact with variables and signals from the toolbar?
