What is a UR+ product?

In general, a UR+ product is:

An accessory component that expand or enhance the functionality of UR robots

Meaning:

  • Accessory - hence not including the robot itself – not OEM solutions.
  • Expands functionality - e.g. EOAT, new comm. protocols…
  • Enhance functionality - e.g. easier machine tending, more adv. Palletizing
  • UR Robots - customized to work directly / plug&play with UR

A certain level of customization is required to qualify. There are three major criteria for customizing UR+ products:

  1. Use minimum one, but preferably all, interfaces (electrical, mechanical and/or software) to the UR robot
  2. User interface should (to the best extend) be done using UR’s graphical UI, PolyScope, via the URCaps SDK.
  3. Setting up the product should be easy, and the product should be working flawlessly with UR arms, and the total user experience should be manageable to an inexperienced user.

These three criteria should be to the best extend be implemented, for the product to be qualified to the UR+ Showroom.

UR+ products should seek to follow UR key value drivers:

  • Easy programming
  • Fast set-up
  • Flexible deployment
  • Collaborative and safe
  • Fastest payback in the industry

Below, a number of product examples are presented, in order to demonstrate these criteria.

Product type:
A binary operated gripper, that may be operated solely using digital signals.

Typically qualifies:

  • Mechanical interface directly to UR Tool flange
  • Electrical interface directly to UR Tool connector, by M8 8-pin connector
  • Current consumption within UR limits
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Mechanical changes needed for user to mount gripper on UR Tool flange
  • Electrical modifications needed to interface to UR Tool connector or external cables required to connect to control box
  • Current consumption above UR limits
  • No UR specific user instructions

Product type:
An advanced end-effector, which has multiple configuration settings. Various communication interfaces, e.g. Ethernet based.

Typically qualifies:

  • Setup and operation possible through URCaps plugin in PolyScope
  • Mechanical interface directly to UR Tool flange
  • Electrical interface directly to control box I/O, Tool connector, USB, or Ethernet port
  • Current consumption within UR limits, or external control box or power supply provided
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Modification of sample program or URScript needed to control end-effector
  • Setup in external software or web interface required
  • Mechanical changes needed for user to mount end-effector on UR Tool flange
  • Electrical modifications needed to interface to UR
  • Current consumption above UR limits
  • No UR specific user instructions

Product type:
A machine vision system, with the ability to perform inspection or positional guidance.

Typically qualifies:

  • Calibration/alignment of robot/camera coordinate system possible using PolyScope (URCap).
  • Possibility to trigger, retrieve data and perform simple operations with using PolyScope (URCap).
  • Possibility to teach new reference objects or tasks using PolyScope.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation.

Does not qualify:

  • External software or script coding necessary to calibrate camera/robot.
  • Example UR program or URScript necessary to retrieve data from camera.
  • No UR specific user instructions.

Product type:
Offline simulation software for generation robot motion based on CAD/CAM modelling.

Typically qualifies:

  • Software has all UR arms as a selectable robot model
  • Software can output UR program files (.urp)
    Alternative:
    Software can output URScript wrapped in plugin in PolyScope. (See Script Wrapper sample)
  • Generated UR files are well structured and follow the guidelines of e.g. URScript language.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding the user in putting UR files into operation on a UR robot

Does not qualify:

  • Not possible to simulate all UR arms
  • Software outputs raw script files to UR program.
  • Generated UR files cause errors, or query the robot to perform unrecommended motions.
  • No UR specific user instructions

Product type:
Protective devices based solely on mechanical design or cable guidance systems.

Typically qualifies:

  • Product mechanically fits well on UR arms
  • Mechanical system does not negatively affect system performance
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Mechanical modifications needed to mount on UR robot
  • Mechanical system negatively affect system performance, e.g. by thermal effects, high friction or similar
  • No user instructions provided to setup on UR robot

Product type:
Mobility enhancing products, such as linear tracks or AGV’s.

Typically qualifies:

  • Platform can be asked by robot to move to custom or pre-defined position using PolyScope plugins.
  • System comes directly with mounting and platform for UR robot.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • URScript or example programs required to handshake between platform and UR. UR unable to wait for or control motions of platform.
  • Mechanical or electrical modification needed, to integrate UR with platform.
  • No user instructions provided to setup on UR robot

Product type:
Safety devices which increase safety in collaborative robot applications.

Typically qualifies:

  • Software or mechanical interface as required for other UR+ product types not related to safety.
  • Electrical interfaces to UR Safety inputs and outputs
  • Example risk assessment comprising the setup including UR robot and the safety device.
    Including example safety settings for UR.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Mechanical or electrical modifications necessary to integrate.
    Software configuration in external software necessary.
  • Relevant electrical interfaces not using UR Safety I/O
  • No risk assessment example provided.
  • No user instructions provided to setup on UR robot

Product type:
Force and torque sensors.

Typically qualifies:

  • Mechanically fits directly to UR Tool flange, and duplicates same flange on output.
  • Necessary configuration and setup possible using plugin in PolyScope.
  • Measurement data fed into UR Control loop using RTDE force data interface.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Mechanical modifications necessary, or output of sensor does not replicate standard UR flange.
  • Necessary to use external software or interface, or URScript or example programs to configure sensor.
  • Measurement data only presented as script variables.
  • No user instructions provided to setup on UR robot

Product type:
Mechanical workstation assemblies and mounting platforms.

Typically qualifies:

  • Mechanically fits directly for mounting UR3, UR5 and/or UR10.
  • Mechanical assembly withstands torques anf forces, as specified in the User Manual, section Mounting.
  • Includes a URCap plugin, that eases picking or placing items, in pre-defined positions or patterns.
    E.g. by using a number of pre-defined patterns or “layers” the customer can use, for storing workpieces.
  • Necessary electrical connections easy to integrate / hot-swap with external machinery.
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Mechanical modifications necessary to mount robot Base flange.
  • Mechanical assembly not strong enough to withstand required torque and force.
  • No URCap plugin supplied, to operate the robot in respect to the workstation or platform.
  • No electrical interfacing guidelines given.
  • No user instructions provided to operate workstation with UR robot.

Product type:
Quick change or zero-position devices for Tool and Base.

Typically qualifies:

  • Mechanically fits well with UR Tool flange or Base flange.
  • Duplicates Tool or Base flange dimensions on output
  • Electrical pass.through for relevant cables (Tool connector or Robot cable)
  • Mechanical tolerances does not degrade robot precision
  • Electrical connections does not affect system performance
  • UR specific user instructions guiding even the inexperienced user in setup, operation, and uninstallation

Does not qualify:

  • Base or Tool dimensions not duplicated on output
  • No electrical pass-through for Tool connector or Robot cable
  • Tolerances negatively affecting robot precision or not documented
  • Electrical connections degrading robot performance
